Bugs

I have had great success with these lids, only one failed seal this season, and I can take responsibility for that, as the ring was not applied properly.
This company has a US and a Canadian outlet, I believe the head office is in the US. The lids are made in China, to the company’s specifications, so they are high quality lids.
The shorter box was purchased years ago, and the taller box was purchased months ago. I found it curious that the same number of lids are in both boxes. The shorter box has carefully packaged lids, the taller box the lids were not so carefully packaged, they were much looser. I notice no difference in quality, just in the packaging, and at our house that does not matter.

Now that canning season is virtually over for 2026, I am catching up with controlling the fruit flies. Last year I got a handle on them early, putting out my traps in early June, using apple cider vinegar. That strategy was very successful in controlling their population.

But this year I experimented with using Kombucha instead of apple cider vinegar. That has been an epic fail. The Kombucha developed pellicles that sealed the liquid, and therefore the acidic aroma. It attracted very few fruit flies at first, and then none. The fruit fly population remained quite healthy, procreating wildly. By the time I realized my mistake, it was to late to nip the population growth in the bud.

I replaced the Kombucha in my traps with apple cider vinegar, and suddenly the traps were crowded with fruit flies. Now, at last, in mid-October there few fruit flies left. I have learned my lesson, and will always use apple cider vinegar in my traps.

Attila and I have picked up another kind of bug, probably when we were grocery shopping. Attila first felt it, fatigue with a bad cough, which eventually settled in his lungs. Days later I felt it, with a scratchy throat and fatigue. So far my lungs are unaffected. We do not know what it is, cold, flu, covid, or it is remotely possible it is RSV. Unless it becomes a serious issue we don’t need to know what it is.

So today there are no projects. I am in my pyjamas, a big warm housecoat, and thick cozy socks. Attila is beginning to feel better today, so he is back out in the garden, probably it is too soon for that, but he could not resist. He just brought in about six quarts of fresh green beans. There are still beets, cabbage, and kohlrabi to be harvested, no rush on those. I am contemplating pressure canning the beets, there are a lot of them.

Covid shots are available here, but not flu shots, not yet. It is just as well the decision was made to wait and have them both at the same time. Otherwise we would be dealing with symptoms from the vaccinations and whatever bug has us presently in its thrall.

Much is going our country, Canada, today. The only agency we have at the moment is to vote in our municipal election. The candidates to vote for have been selected. One candidate we will not consider is the individual whose signs are placed directly in front of, and blocking sight of, their competition. The candidate, or their “fans”, aren’t very honourable in my opinion, so no vote for them.

Quote

“Don’t waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
1803 – 1882

Good advice I think, but not so easy as it sounds, particularly with rejection issues! The cataract rejection requires attention until resolved.
