Heavy Frost

When I walked into the kitchen this morning, and glanced out the window at the neighbour’s roof, it sported a heavy frost. Within an hour or so the sun was working its magic, melting the icy coating almost on contact. Luckily Attila was prepared for this eventuality, having been warned by the weather people of the possibility. Last night the vulnerable plants were covered with sheets of plastic, and everything made it through the night. The planting of more vulnerable starts from the little greenhouses was postponed a day or so, to wait for warmer nights.

Our Frost Date is April 21 to April 30, so this is a very late frost.

After a very short heat wave, the weather is cool again, and sunny. I prefer cooler temperatures, but not quite this cool.

With the house closed up last night the radon level rose to almost 400 Bq/m3 over the course of the night. Despite the cool weather, I opened every window in the house as soon as I got out of bed. It takes a few hours with the windows open to drop the levels below the recommended point (200 q/m3 in Canada, 100 q/m3 in Europe). It is chilly in the house this morning! I am wearing layers of clothing to keep warm. I hope Attila gets the ERV installed soon, it is a long process. And after that I am hoping the ERV clears the radon out of the house. A lot of hoping going on this morning.

If the ERV does not work, the professionals will be called in to remediate the high radon levels. An unexpected expense, but a necessary one.

The garden is starting to gift us with food. Fresh spinach from the garden went into the green salad for last night’s dinner. Fresh rhubarb has been harvested several times now, some stewed to enjoy right away by Attila, and some washed, diced, and frozen to enjoy over the winter months.

The strawberry plants, the ones we bought that were marked down to a dollar each at the grocery store, were put in the ground last June, are thriving right now. Both the original plants in the raised bed, and the rooted runners transplanted in the ground in the outer garden, are green and healthy and covered with blossoms. Last summer we enjoyed a few fresh strawberries every day. I wonder what the yield will be like this summer.

My body never fails to amaze me. My diet is low calorie, in addition to low a lot of other things. I walk two miles daily, with rare exception. I water fast, and only eat between the hours of 9:00 a.m., and 5 p.m. I eat the same healthy breakfast, and the same healthy lunch, every single day. Over the last two years, on this routine, I’ve lost about twenty pounds. BUT despite the previous weight loss, my body has decided enough of this, lets put some weight on this girl, my weight is going up. There is nothing to be done about this, I will not eat less than is healthy for the sake of losing weight. I am not attempting athletics at this age, I am active enough. According to the Cardiac Rehab I am in very good shape for my age (except for anaphylaxis and aneurysms). According to the dietitian my diet is excellent. According to the algorithms at myfitnesspal I should have been underweight a year ago. So I will just continue on as I have been, perhaps my body will get tired of this tomfoolery!

I’ll end this here. I need to have a chat with Ginger. He has decided that a vocal protest to the open windows is the right way to handle his displeasure. If I cannot reason with him, and I fear this will fail, then I will resort to cuddling and belly rubbing, which never fails.
