Five 500-ml jars of diced beets. All seem to be sealed.
Beets are messy, and beet juice can stain. There was a bit if siphoning in the canner.
That turned the water red.
I meant to can beets several days ago. Attila harvested, washed, blanched, peeled, and diced the beets. Then life got in the way, the beets sat in the refrigerator until today. I had to reheat them, then pressure can them.
Yesterday we approached our regular pharmacy for Covid and flu shots. We were told that we had to register online, or could telephone them at the local pharmacy to make an appointment, but we could not make an appointment in person. I intended to call them when we got home.
So off we went and continued with our weekly shopping. As it turned out the shots were easily available at the NoFrills pharmacy. The pharmacist there was amazing. They researched the medicinal and non-medicinal ingredients of both shots, and provided me with a printed copy. The vaccinations were safe for me, and so we proceeded to receive them.
We are not feeling 100% today, so have skipped going for our daily walk. We are focusing on doing domestic chores that are less physically demanding. I canned beets and made Kombucha, Attila prepped and painted a bit more of the basement floor.
The weather is lovely, sunny, and warm. The windows are open. Every so often a little breeze sneaks in past the curtains.
I received a missive from my Family Doctor, my ascending aortic dilation has not grown at all, it is stable. This is wonderful news!
The echo-cardiogram was performed by a clinic in a nearby city. The staff were everything I could hope for, pleasant, helpful, respectful of the allergy, efficient. They certainly set the bar high!
Last night the house cooled after we retired for the night. Attila arose in the early hours and turned on the heating system. This is later in the month than it has been other years. The heat was turned off again just after we arose for the day, and the windows were opened. The radon levels rise to unacceptable levels overnight. We are not quite sure what we are going to do about this when it is too cold to open the windows in the morning, so that it can escape.
We seem to be living in an era where some powerful humans and technologies wield that power with the depth of understanding and ethics of hungry infants.

How wonderful that your aortic dialation is stable! Keep up what you’ve been doing. It’s working!
Maggie, do you have a bathroom fan that moves the bathroom air outside? We use that to help remove bad air when we have poor air quality but have been going in and out of the house a lot. I’m wondering if that would help with your radon problem.
I hear you, with not feeling that great after the covid vaccine. I wasn’t bothered at all the first day but the second day I was “low energy”. Not that I felt poorly; I was just dragging. And both DH and I had a little soreness in our vaccine arms on the 3rd and 4th days.
When I can’t stay warm enough with extra blankets my knee starts to ache enough to keep me awake, so we had to turn our heat on a few weeks ago.
Thanks Teri, I am grateful for the results on the aortic dilation! Thanks to my Chocolate Zucchini Muffins, I am am able to stay on track with the recommended dietary restrictions, nothing like having a treat every day!
We do not have a bathroom fan, but we suspect that would make it worse. The radon is entering through the basement, somewhere. If we were to pull that air up and out, it would bring even more radon up into the living area. Remediation often involves venting the earth under the house, we may eventually have to do that.
That kind of ache, from the cold, is so painful! I get that in my hips from time to time, it keeps me awake. Better to “head that off at the pass” and turn on the heating system!
Our house stays warm a little longer than most because we preserve food, which means the range is used daily for canning, and the dehydrators are moving warm air into the house. Canning season is over now, so I am glad the heating system is turned on here!
