In case you are wondering what is in the salt shaker, it is granulated sugar. The label ensures it is not confused with salt. We use it for things like sprinkling a wee bit of sugar on fresh peach slices, that sort of thing, when a little goes a long way.
Attila plants almost all of the garden from seed, often from seeds he has saved from previous years. This large tomato was grown on a plant started from a saved seed.
The tomatoes are coming in fast and furious right now. As is the basil.
We canned Green Tomato Chow Chow again yesterday, and today Attila harvested red tomatoes for sauce. He blanched and peeled them, I pureed and cooked them to the desired thickness. At this stage they are cooled and go into the freezer. At some point, when the accumulated frozen tomato sauce will fill a stock pot, they will be thaw, heat and can the sauce for the winter.
The basil has provided us with multiple batches of pesto, which has been frozen in paper muffin cups and packaged. We have enough pesto to last the year now, so on to plan B for the basil. It is being harvested and dehydrated.
The basil, no matter how much of it Attila harvests, always looks the same, as if nothing has been removed from the plant. I think we are going to have a lot of dehydrated basil this year.
The cataract fiasco is behind me, the surgery is cancelled, and all the appointments are cancelled. The hospital did not postpone the surgery, they cancelled it. When I got that news my first reaction was to feel as if I’d been reprieved from death row. Now that I know it is not postponed as discussed, but cancelled, I can put it behind me and move forward. I’ve lost my $900, for testing and medications, but compared to losing my life, this is of little consequence. I’ve decided not to fight for the money, although I could, and would probably win. My energy will be rightly focused on getting the surgery I need. I’ve already made efforts in that direction, and although there is no guarantee of success, I will pursue it. It will take time… which I have.
Just wow though. I have had anaphylaxis for over 40 years, experienced other surgeries, and this is the worst quality of care I have ever run into, it beggars belief it was so bad. I hope it is just bad luck, and a few frightful people, but it might also be a sign of the times, with the state of health care in Ontario. Time will tell.
Now I can return my gaze to home life, and find inner calm again.
September usually offers some hot weather, near the beginning of the month. Today was a hot and humid day.
I remember my second year of teaching, so long ago, when September was exceptionally hot. I lived with my first husband in an apartment in a high rise apartment in Toronto, with no air conditioning. It was impossible to sleep, it was so hot. I had candles on the table, and came home from school one day to find that all that remained were puddles of wax.
Mist cottage has a cooling system, and I am very grateful for it.
My Mom decided she wanted to move to the village where my sisters live, so she rented an apartment there. Yesterday was moving day, my sisters and brother-in-law were there to help her settle in after the movers delivered her belongings. Sis sent a video of the new apartment after the dust settled, it is lovely, and there is even a balcony. I find it very comforting to be able to visualize where Mom is living. I think Mom is going to love it, but she looked pretty tired yesterday. Moving is exhausting, I am sure it was quite a busy day. Sis sent a picture of Mom this morning, Mom’s beautiful smile has returned. Congratulations Mom!
