The Vegetable Chronicles: Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi
This is our biggest Kohlrabi. The compost added to the garden, and lots of rain, really made a difference in the yields this year.

Years ago we ordered seeds from a company in the US. It was their policy to include a surprise packet of seeds with a purchase of a certain size. One of those surprise packets was Kohlrabi.

Neither of us had ever tasted Kohlrabi, not even seen it for sale. So Attila, always ready to try something new, planted the seeds. We have been growing Kohlrabi every year since.

Kohlrabi is a mild tasting brassica that is a root vegetable. It’s flesh when raw is similar to a potato. It is relatively nutritious, high in fibre, low in carbohydrates. We peel, dice, blanch, and freeze it. When we have potatoes we cook the frozen kohlrabi along with the potatoes in the instant pot, then mash them together. It reduces the glycemic index and the calories of the potatoes, adds nutritious elements, and we find it delicious.

Mom is bouncing back, feeling better every day. Still in hospital, but hopefully not much longer.

Today is much cooler than it has been. As I stepped outside to commence the morning walk it was a bit of a shock. Luckily I had decided to wear a shirt over my t-shirt, so I wasn’t too uncomfortable. Also, after about ten minutes of vigorous walking one does warm up a bit.

I’ve never had kohlrabi! I’m glad you’ve found a use for it. I’m especially glad your mother is continuing to improve!
