The Heat Is On

The heat is on, as of today, October 27, 2025.

Last autumn, on November 6th, 2024, the weather was wonderful and mild, I had all the windows in the house open. This year the warm weather disappeared much earlier. In 2021 we turned on the heat on November 2. In 2023 we turned on the heat on November 3. It is definitely cold earlier this year than in recent years.

It was -3C as we stepped out the door to go for our morning walk. The cold weather has begun in earnest. I will be wearing a parka, hat, and gloves for the morning stroll, and continue to wear socks and sandals until the weather turns wet, which should be later this week.

When I arose this morning it was 19C in the house. When heating with wood, electric heaters, or a furnace of any kind, we would probably find this temperature comfortable. But we heat with a heat pump, and it is a different kind of heat.

With a heat pump the thermal mass of the the interior of the house is the same as the room temperature, it can feel cool to the touch. A warm human body, sitting on a chair that is 19C will feel the chill.

With wood, electric, or furnace heating, the air is occasionally warmed to the desired temperature with a heat higher than the air temperature, the thermal mass is heated by this and remains warmer than the air temperature even after the heating episode has passed. A warm human body, sitting on a chair that is warmer than the air temperature of 19C will feel less chill.

We set the temperature slightly higher because we heat with a heat pump. For now it is set at 20C, we shall see how that goes.

We received these canning lids and rings from an estate. We will be passing them along to the local thrift store, and will attach a label to them. They are not regular mouth lids. They are wide mouth lids. They are GEM lids, for jars with a specific sized mouth, GEM canning jars. I am hoping that the attached note on each box will alert those using regular or wide mouth canning jars that these lids and rings will not fit their jars. I am hoping that some seasoned canner will have GEM jars and find these lids and rings.
I could try to sell these items. I had some a few years ago and mentioned it on social media, there were many people interested in purchasing them, as at that time they were out of production. They were kindly passed on to me, so I would like to pass them on to someone who will appreciate and use them.
I am not one much for trying to get money out of other people, a flaw by some measures.
I covet little.

We switched to our winter bed sheets today. I woke up last night shivering from the chilly room. I turned the heat up a degree and put on a pair of socks. Then I could fall asleep easily.

Our temps have been dramatically bouncing up and down until 2 weeks ago. We’re definitely in late fall weather now.
