IF the weather people are correct, our long hot summer is about to become more comfortable, with highs around 25C. It would be lovely if that were to occur. No rain in sight though.
The garden is yielding enough produce to keep us supplied with fresh vegetables every day. However, the drought has not only slowed plant growth down, it has also resulted in dense, thick skinned tomatoes etc. Up until now we have been eating everything we pick.
Yesterday we found a half bushel of Roma tomatoes for $10.00. We bought a half bushel, and ten pounds of onions.
Today our first of the season canning session began. Attila harvested enough banana peppers to add to a double batch of tomato salsa. We used half of the purchased Roma tomatoes, the purchased onions, and the garden peppers, to make and can 14 jars of salsa.
Tomorrow we will make and can another double batch of tomato salsa.
We won’t be canning as much produce this year as we have in previous years. So far we are eating almost everything we harvest. Attila has frozen rhubarb, edible pod peas, cabbage, and beets for the winter. Yet to come are more peppers, tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers for eating.
If rain arrives in the next few weeks our harvest might be more generous.
The cardiac rehab program I am enrolled in is turning out to be of great benefit. The dietician and the physiotherapist have paid careful attention to my individual needs, so that the tips and feedback are invaluable. Soon I will have a final assessment, and then it will be up to me to follow through with the knowledge that has been shared with me.

“There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness.”
Josh Billings
1818 – 1885
Forgiving, at least for me, is not the same as forgetting. It is a challenge to forgive without forgetting, a challenge not to fall back into the feeling of being wronged. But if it is truly in the past, if it is truly forgiven, it is possible and preferrable to move forward without forgetting.
Isn’t good when we are listened to and ‘people’ understand our needs may not be the same as others
It’s great your garden is actually providing you with food – yes good to have preserved for for later but if you need it now don’t hesitate to eat it
Cathy, I am so lucky that the dietician and physiotherapist are so responsive. The intake person certainly was not, and it was hard not to let their negativity colour the whole experience, but I am glad I gave it all a chance!
Food here is very expensive, but produce in season is not unreasonable thank goodness, hence the tomatoes and onions. The produce from our garden is organic, and we could not afford to buy organic vegetables, they are artisanal food here, not much for the money, so out of reach. Everything is behind its time in the garden, due to the drought and extreme heat, but since Attila keeps at the watering, we are still able to harvest enough vegetables to include with every meal! We are so lucky!
I don’t know if it’s just around here but I find farmer’s market produce very expensive in this area. We get much better prices at our grocery stores.
We’re also supposed to move to temps around 25C. That starts tomorrow, Sunday, for us. It’ll be cooler but we still aren’t getting the needed rain.
Teri, I have observed the same thing about “farmer’s” market prices, in every location we have lived in. The grocery store prices are much better, although I suspect that for the most part the produce is not quite as fresh. We pay quite a premium for that little bit of freshness, that for us makes no difference at all.
I am replying to you comment on Sunday, and it is a bit cooler, but still humid. It helps that it is cloudy. No rain her either. We had an 80% chance of rain this morning. Attila and I, between us, felt about ten drops in total. As usual it rains all around us, but not a drop here. Lawns are completely dead here, and even the weeds are dying out, with some exceptions with plants that have very deep roots.
We actually did have some rain last night. The roads weren’t wet but we had actual puddles, and DH says the grassy areas around the garden have greened up a little. Our high was supposed to be 25 today but we only made 22! Our low tonight is supposed to be 10!
