Saturday

It is Saturday today.

When I was in primary school, then high school, then university, then working/studying, Saturday’s had a special glow. All things home were suddenly accessible. The usual frenzy of the weekday obligations went into hibernation. There was suddenly time to do some of the things that needed doing, and the opportunity to spend time in my personal space.

When Attila worked six days a week, Saturday was the sixth day of work. It was the day of the week I missed him the most.

Then for a few years, Attila’s worked Monday to Friday, and Saturday’s took on that special glow again.

Finally when Attila retired, Saturdays evolved into something else entirely. I discovered that on Saturday’s the quiet neighbourhood was not so quiet. Snow blowers roared in the winter, lawn mowers roared in the summer. People were very busy in the neighbourhood, enjoying the end of their work week. Stores were crowded, and roads were busy. Saturday’s became the day we stayed at home, away from the hustle and bustle. I found myself looking forward to Mondays.

And that is where we are at this point in time, Saturday is a day to enjoy the quiet of home.

Today the summer heat arrived. We knew it was coming. Our morning walk is taken as early as possible, when there is still some shade on our route, and before the heat begins to take over the day.

Attila is still working on the skirting around the house, and working in the garden. I am doing administrative things, and attending to the kitchen tasks that have become routines, things like milling flour, baking bread, baking muffins, making soup base, making Kombucha, there is always something that needs to be done in the kitchen.

When I am in the kitchen my view includes Granny’s Rose bush, in full glorious bloom. Alongside it is the Clematis, which is also in bloom. Everything in the garden is green and thriving right now.

I remember the ‘Saturday glow’ too. I woke up thinking “I’ve been retired for seven years now!” I’m glad to be retired.
