Some days I am extremely busy avoiding what I don’t like doing. It can occupy all of my time. Today is one of those days.
Today I am avoiding the shower. I hate dealing with my hair.
I dislike hair wrapping itself around my fingers as I wash or rinse my hair.
I dislike collecting all the hair that falls from my head during a shower, which is even more difficult now that some of it is white.
I dislike having a wet head for hours and hours and hours. In the winter wet hair becomes a factor in when I can venture outside the house.
I dislike needing to wear a hat while my hair is still wet, my hair behaves badly when interacting with hats. In the summer I need to wear a hat when out walking, so that wet hair is a factor in trying to schedule a walk.
There is no part of caring for my hair that I do like.
I’ve thought of getting my hair cut short. But every attempt has failed, the hair cuts have been consistently incredibly bad (except for my sister’s cuts), and incredibly expensive (except for my sister’s cuts). The result is that a haircut has become another activity that results in me being extremely busy trying to avoid it.
Attila just shakes his head at this dilemma. Attila has short hair, and a bit of baldness, so hair cuts are easy and straightforward, as is hair washing and drying.
You would think after all the decades I’ve been an adult, making my own hair decisions, that I would have this figured out.
But I haven’t figured it out.
Unless I count being busy avoiding it as figuring it out.
Where are the appliances that let you choose a style, put your head in the right position, push a button, and the whole process is handled efficiently and to order?
I will close here, because I’ve embarrassed myself, and feel I need to have that shower, now!

I have hair issues too, but not like yours. I like it off my face and so it needs to be short. But short hair isn’t as easy to maintain as it sounds. It has to be cut often to keep it the way I like it. It sticks up in the morning and needs to be soaked down. We don’t have a shower (oh how I love a shower!) so it means sticking my head in the bathroom sink. I keep a little strainer in the drain to catch the hair that is inevitably caught there.
But I haven’t had a haircut in quite awhile. My friend Bev, who was a hairdresser, died in January and I haven’t made an appointment with another stylist in Wadena yet. Instead I took a neck-warmer and stuck it in my hair like Keith Richards wears his. It’s been working quite well! and I like the look. Heaven knows how long this will go on. Surely not forever.
Kate, you are correct, short hair has its downsides as well!
The biggest catch is that it needs to be cut, often, and the cut has to be paid for, often. The inexpensive salons, the in and out places where you take a number and wait your turn, are an hour away, and we seldom travel that far for any reason, let alone a haircut. The cut at those salons is unpredictable. My last trim was OK, not great, but not an abomination either. But it was not a hair style, it was just cutting off a few inches of uncooperative hair. The other salons charge a small fortune, always ends up being about $100.00. They only take twenty minutes max to cut my hair, so that amounts to $300.00 an hour, which I think is highway robbery. And they get snippy and resentful if the tip isn’t huge. And the last cut I had left bald spots and it took almost a year for my hair to recover. I wore a hat most of time when going out.
My hair is very fine, curls, waves, and will not, absolutely will not cooperate with me for styling etc. I used to wear it very long and wild, which suited me. But my hair is changing as it ages, and will no longer cooperate even with that style.
I really like the neck warmer idea!
But my head seems to dislike bands of any kind, within about ten minutes the band is riding up and letting all hairy wildness loose again. Maybe I could add barrettes, that might stabilize things!
I had a hairstylist in the little city, Michael, who was amazing. He just understood my hair, he tamed it with his haircuts, don’t know how, just amazing. Too far away to visit Michael now. My sister’s cuts are great, but again, too far away to be a practical solution.
Sometimes I think about shaving my head, haven’t done it though.
Since no one made a dream haircutting machine, I eventually just bought a Wahl’s clipper like I used for my husband’s hair, only for a self-cut. I originally cut it myself, but now for the summer when it is hot, my husband cuts my hair with the one inch attachment every five weeks, and a little more trimming around my ears. It is not glamorous, but it works.
One inch, a bold choice! It sounds so practical, so very practical. I have no idea what I would look like! I do have a birth mark under this hair, I wonder how that would play out. Thinking about it now!
After having the blocked colon in the winter I lost enough weight that my hair has been falling out over the last few months. Not too much long hair left, though it looks like I just have very thin hair because the new hair is growing in and is long enough that my scalp isn’t showing through. When I get to only patches of long hair left I’ll trim it even with the hair at the nape of my neck.
When this happened last year my hair grew back quickly. Hopefully that’ll happen again.
Teri, that sounds challenging! Hopefully your hair will grow back quickly, and the blockage will not reoccur!
