This morning I had an appointment with the bank, Attila came along as some of the processes being taken care of involved him. Since we were out and about, we stopped at the Post Office, so that I could send the old ISP modem back to the company, after receiving and installing a new one. Then we headed to the grocery store. Yikes, it was so crowded in there, all the carts were taken, line ups for the cash registers reached the back of the store. It was such a relief to get out of there and head back home.
Once home I finally had my breakfast, which had to be toast and peanut butter. I usually eat my chocolate zucchini muffins, but I was all out of those, so the toast had to do. Then it was time to bake more muffins, and some blueberry apple squares. Later today I will make a big batch of borscht, using our frozen garden beets and cabbage. I need to bake bread as well, Attila wants to use all we have to make stuffing for the turkey he plans on roasting tomorrow.
I used the last of the whole wheat flour to make the muffins and squares, which means it is time to get busy sorting wheat berries so that I can mill more flour. I’ve taken a break from all these kitchen projects to sit here and write this.
It is sunny, and was below freezing this morning when we went for a walk. It is warmer now, and guess where Attila is… in the garden of course! Today he is planting peas in the soil, planting the greenery from the horseradish harvest, and transplanting root clumps of Granny’s Heliopsis. Attila is in his happy place.

Lines to the back of the store! Holy smokes!
Thursday is our normal shopping day. First day of the new flyer. Fortunately, if we’re out of the house between 10:30 and 11 it’s usually not too busy yet at the 2 grocery stores that we shop.
Teri, it was as busy as we have ever seen it at the grocery store. It is quite a drive to other reasonably priced grocery stores here, the Metro near us is very high priced, not sure if that is a local thing or not, most people don’t shop there. The first day of the new flyer is when we often shop, particularly during harvest season when the bushels of fresh produce are up for grabs.
We have 2 in-town stores to choose from and one a 10 minute drive from the other side of town. One in-town store is less expensive and we do most of our shopping there. The other store is quite expensive and we only buy things not available at the other stores. And then there’s the more distant option, which we only go to when they have the odd lower price on certain meats.
Teri, it is nice to have a few options for grocery shopping. The program Flipp has been recommended to me, but with only two grocery stores to choose from, it doesn’t really save any time, or offer any useful information. I can see that in city, where there are a lot of grocery outlets within a half an hour driving distance, it might be good to have all the sales available in one place to peruse, but it isn’t as useful in rural areas.
