Another beautiful day here. The sun is very strong, when we went for our walk this morning the sun beat down on us through most of the journey. When we encountered the shade of a tree, the weather seemed marvellous, then out in the sun and not so much. I love trees!
Attila has completed constructing, filling, and planting all of the raised beds now. Of the last two, one is planted with strawberries, the plants purchased on markdown at the local grocery store, and the other pepper plants which Attila started from seed. The strawberry plants seem very hardy, they did not wilt when transplanted from their pots, as well the two that we already had planted in the ground a few years ago are thriving in the raised bed.
Attila has also completed moving the 8 yards of soil that was delivered by truck onto our driveway. He even cleaned the surface of the driveway when he had the soil all moved. Now he is puttering in the garden, planting a few squash seeds, and some additional Hollyhock starts.
I will bake bread and pay bills. A challenging budget month this month, we were quite a bit over the budget, it didn’t stretch far enough to pay all the bills. Luckily we are prepared for that, particularly since a project is underway. We tend not to begin projects we won’t be able to pay for as we go along. All the big expenses for the garden beds and soil have been dealt with now, time to tighten our belts a wee bit, and get back to normal spending. It really helps that a good proportion of our diet is fresh from the garden, and our spending at the grocery store is greatly reduced because of that.
My Mom is happily settled into her new apartment, and she is a flurry of activity. Even though she no longer lives with my sister, she still drives the distance to water my sister’s garden, while my sister is at her cottage. My Mom continues to care for her kids, even though we are all now seniors and/or retired. She has always lived close to one or both of my sisters, and has always provided caring support for them and their children.
Today Mom is enjoying a family get together at the youngest sister’s house, with all of the youngest sister’s children and grandchildren, and the middle sister and her husband too. The whole family will be there, with the exception of my niece who is travelling, my two deceased brothers, also my middle brother and myself and Attila, and our children and grandchildren. My Mom has six children (four living), seven grandchildren (two are my children), and ten great grandchildren (six are my grandchildren), there are quite a few of us. The great grandchildren range in age from newborn to university student.
Attila and I spend an hour or so before bedtime working on a jigsaw puzzle. The current puzzle is quite challenging, every piece seems to have a few different colours on it, and the colours don’t vary by much. The picture on the box, all we have to go on, is blurred and indistinct. I took a break from it one evening, as I was feeling frustrated. But it drew me back the next day, when I could see the colours more clearly by daylight. It will take a while to finish this one! Puzzles are relaxing, requiring no conversation, and yet providing small unimportant challenges, and small unimportant successes, and it can be taken up or left behind in an instant, and resumed at any point in time. I like that I don’t have to win at the expense of a loser, my kind of game.

DH and I were also working outside, today. I was sweeping the porch and sides of the house and periodically supervising 😉 as DH was laying a drip irrigation system in the front garden. I’m debating a timer for watering, as sometimes we’re busy or the day gets away from us and I don’t want our garden suffering if we’re distracted. Lol! I bought this irrigation system a year ago and it never got done.
Best of luck to your mom in her new apartment!
We had DH’s daughter and new BF over last Saturday and spent some time at the local multicultural fair and then went for an ice cream cone. It was good fun.
“We,” via DH’s middle child/younger son’s children are now great grandparents 3 times over, at only 68 and 67 years old! That just doesn’t seem real, and I don’t know anyone else doing that at our age. Babies having babies…
Teri, an irrigation system is a great idea! If I were the gardener here, there would be times I would miss watering the garden, so I would use an irrigation system. Attila love to water by hand, with his bucket and watering can, would not consider an irrigation system. He is funny that way, he also insists on washing dishes by hand, even though we have a dishwasher. Set in his ways.
Thanks for the good wishes for my Mom, so far she is loving her new place.
Your outing sounds lovely.
That is amazing, great grandparents! That is very young, lots of years to enjoy them!
I’m partial to all sorts of word games. I mainly compete with myself. Of course, there are always the ‘brainiacs’ who complain on the accompanying ‘wordplay’ forums that the puzzles are too easy. One can never know if they are lying. In any case, they don’t impress me. I hope your mother enjoys her new home!
Joan, word games are something I have yet to explore! My Mom loves them, and plays a lot, she is also an accomplished bridge player.
Ah, the “pseudo intelligentsia” are even bringing their quest for recognition into wordplay forums. I believe almost all of them are lying, that is their thing. It reminds me of a boss I once had, said of him was, “he lives to lie”. For many years I was astounded that people thought I was lying if I told them about myself, social media has allowed me to understand why that was. Funny old world, isn’t it!
