I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.
I take medications for my health issues, five of them, all with their own requirements, such as; take with food, take on an empty stomach, don’t take with other medications. It has taken a while to figure out a doable way to get them into my body daily, with the complex combination of requirements. I have that figured out and it is routine now.
I have daily exercises that I need to do to manage the arthritis, back and knees, as well as the daily walking and heart warm up routine recommended for me by the Cardiac Rehabilitation physical therapist. I have that figured out and it is routine now.
Recently the waters have muddied.
I have two new supplements advised for me, one by the physiotherapist, and one by the ophthalmologist. One is to be taken at bedtime. The other is to be taken twice a day, with water and food, and not within two hours of taking any of the other medications.
I have three new sets of daily exercise routines that need to be done: one every hour, two separate routines that need to be done twice a day, and one that needs to be done once a day.
People need a personal assistant to work out an acceptable schedule for all of these “to-dos”… and then frequent reminders in order to follow the schedule. Every specialist makes their recommendations discreetly, any co-ordination needed is down to the patient and the patient’s ingenuity.
I understand, very clearly, why some people just give up and don’t take medications, or do exercises.
I am determined though, to work through it. But figuring out how to incorporate all of the diverse prescriptions, exercise programs, and dietary restrictions is going to take some time.
And I have one more specialist clinic consultation, for which I am on a waiting list. In theory they will give me an appointment near the end of 2026. I should have developed a routine for all of this by then!
For now though, I am feeling a tad overwhelmed by it all. Eventually the dust will settle though, I will have it all worked out, and then I’ll just follow whatever routine I come up with.
Staying alive in your “golden years” is full time work, retirement is not leisurely.
But we are still having fun!
Attila has temporarily taken a break from the ERV installation, he is still working on making a hole in the concrete wall. Instead he spent his day removing branches from an evergreen tree that was planted far to close the Mist Cottage. The branches touch the roof, which has deteriorated in that spot. The branches, once removed from the tree, were broken up, bundled, and taken to the curb for the upcoming yard waste pickup day.
I have been milling flour, and making Kombucha today.
Ginger rotates between sleeping peacefully, and giving us the what for, for being busy in the kitchen and yard, and spending our time in the living room near his favourite napping location. Luckily for us, we are experts at ignoring such complaints.

Maggie, I see a spreadsheet in your future.
We are very fortunate here to be surrounded by medical services (and old enough for US Medicare). When my husband’s medication/supplement schedule got too chaotic, we were able to schedule an appointment with the hospital pharmacist and have him sort those out.
I hope perhaps your local pharmacist might be of assistance if there’s no other resource available.
Wendy, lol, a spreadsheet would be just the thing!
That is fortunate in your area, and I had not thought of the pharmacist! I will get my information together and ask a few questions at the pharmacy, great idea!
I think there should be comorbidity specialists to assist those with multiple issues to coordinate their care, prescriptions, diet, medications, etc. Maybe such a service exists, I will have to talk to my GO and do some research!
