A Spring Day

I keep my winter boots and cold weather regalia at the ready, but today, for the morning walk, I wore only my parka, a ball cap to keep the rain off my spectacles, and my sandals (with socks).

It is raining off and on, the sky is a gloomy grey, and there is still a significant amount of snow piled up in dirty mounds and stubborn patches in the yard. Despite all that we had a lovely walk this morning! The temperature was above freezing, the roads and sidewalks almost clear of snow, and the breeze was refreshing.

After a good night’s rest, I arose relatively early this morning to get started on my kitchen projects. The water for the green tea was put on to boil, so that the tea could be added, the sugar as well after 15 minutes, and then the mixture left to cool before adding to the Kombucha starter. Wheat berries were measured for the day’s flour milling, two one gallon jars of whole wheat flour. Medications and supplements meted out. Ah, I forgot, first order of the day was to replenish Ginger’s food bowl and water dish. A batch of the daily fibre mixture I dose myself with needed to be made afresh, it doesn’t really work but I ingest it daily as suggested, always the optimist. A batch of Cream of Tomato Soup Base was made. There always seems to be something to do in the kitchen.

Then it is time to ready for the daily walk, the warm up exercises given to me at Cardiac Rehabilitation are done twice a day, before each walk. We spend several hours a day preparing for our walks, and taking our walks. I remember John Bailey, The Old Grey Poet, called his daily strolls the “Medicine Walks”, very apt.

Yesterday my back was acting up, to the point where I forwent our second walk. It was my own fault of course, when grocery shopping I reached over and picked up a ten pound bag of potatoes, just as I have done all my life. This time my back complained bitterly about it. Yesterday I took a few pain killers, it was a bit better this morning but I could still feel it. The I remembered that Joannie told me about a back exercise that worked for her, arms raised, bending back slowly and gently from the waist. That really helped!

The grocery shop yesterday held another disappointment. The bulk molasses purchased has suddenly begun to add a preservative to their product. Boo. Hiss. This was noticed after it arrived in the kitchen, so a second trip was made to return it for a refund. The search for another supplier is underway.

We are planning a trip to the wholesalers to purchase bulk items. It is a day trip, and is tackled annually. In preparation a list is made, so that nothing is forgotten.

During the “in between” moments of the day, the current jigsaw puzzle, word puzzles, books, Asian Dramas, and PBS dramas provide welcome breaks. The garden will soon be calling to Attila. We see little of life beyond our four walls and the garden gate, a sign of the times, our personalities, our age, and our lifestyle.

The sunning is shining here and although the temperature is currently 88F, as predicted, the humidity is only 30% and there’s a nice breeze. Funny how different 88F feels in March at 30% humidity from 88F in June with 70% humidity.

Best of luck on your upcoming shopping expedition. May you find everything you seek at prices you’re willing to pay.
