Attila and I walk for our health. Usually we walk one mile, twice a day. We seldom miss our walks, although we do not always walk at the same time of day each time.
With a morning temperature that fell to -30C yesterday morning, and with a significant wind chill factor, we decided not to risk the walk. We ventured out for a walk at the point in the day that offered the highest temperature. Later in the day it warmed up to -17C, and the wind was light, although very cutting when it is that cold. The footing was sound, there were dry sections on the road. The only time we had to tread on ice was when he heard a vehicle coming and hurried to the side of the road. The sidewalks were bare and dry, an unusual and very welcome happenstance.
Following our usual route on our walk, we passed by a house where the people were coming out to their vehicle in the driveway. The woman greeted us and said, “you are braver than I am out for a walk in this weather”, and added, “we didn’t see you pass by this morning.” What a pleasant surprise to find someone was aware that we exist!
We greet everyone we meet when out for our walks, regardless of their response, friendly or miffed, it matters not to us. We both feel that our smiling faces and greeting may be the only human contact someone else encounters in their day, and want to make sure to offer a friendly hello. That costs us nothing, and benefits us tremendously.
Just under a foot of snow fell between yesterday morning and this morning. We missed our morning walk because the roads were not plowed until later in the morning. Because some vehicles were struggling on the snowy roads, people who have to get to work, we decided not complicate their morning by adding pedestrians to the mix. Being retired, we can choose to go for a walk later in the day!
The sun came out this morning, ending the snow event, but not the cold. It still feels cold out there.
Today I am in the mood for comfort food. For supper we will have grilled cheese and sweet onion sandwiches with Chili Sauce on the side. My Mom made this for me for lunch during the late 1980’s, during a particularly challenging period of time for me, and it remains a very fond memory. Mom served it with cream of tomato soup, another favourite. A grilled cheese sandwich is quick, simple, and nutritious, great for those days where you don’t want to do a lot of cooking. It is quite a treat!
I am thinking of my Mom this morning, the only person who has known me all of my life!

We had terrible whipping winds on Sunday and windchills so low that DH dared only walk our dogs one block down to the mailboxes and back, yesterday. But with all that we only got about 2 inches of snow for Saturday and Sunday. Today, we basically have no wind to speak of but it’s snowing like crazy here. Yet, it’s coming from this lone band of snow traveling down the coast. It looks like they’re forecasting for it to finally be pushed off onto the land. I hope so!
There’s been basically no road maintenance on our roads the last few days. I saw the big plow go by earlier, but only in one direction and you can barely tell any difference. We have no sidewalks, lots of snow, and a few attempting to be hardy souls have their cars in ditches, right now.
Not a place to be walking, today.
Good quote! Warm memories to you on such a cold day!
Thank you Joan! I enjoy the odd day when the weather if fierce enough to keep us looking out at it instead of venturing out into it, as long as it isn’t dangerous of course! It makes me feel grateful for our little house, and the thermostat, lol!
Teri, winds coming off the lake would be very intense! The wind chill is a significant game changer when the temperature is low, frostbite develops rapidly, so wise to only venture out for brief periods.
Wow, snowed in, your weather sounds a lot more intense than it is here! Although there was a foot of snow out on the road this morning, hardy souls were driving through it slowly and successfully. The plow finally went by and out we went, but it was unstable underfoot so our usual walk took twice and long and we were twice as tired when we got home. Stay safe, stay cozy!
