Well, we did manage to wind up most of the paperwork for our administrative project before Christmas. As it proceeded it became less stressful, thank goodness.
Now we wait for responses from the powers that be, to know if we have completed everything satisfactorily. When that is done, we prepare all the paperwork for storage, a rather daunting process, and hopefully the last component of the paperwork portion of the project.
That leaves the digital portion of the project. That will be my responsibility alone, as I am the one in the family who handles such things. There is much to be done with this segment of the process. I have sent out queries to the entities involved, and shall have to wait for responses before deciding how best to proceed. I had explored some options about six months ago, only to find a lot more research was needed before beginning. It is going to be quite technical, so I need to have all my ducks in a row before I move forward with it.
A second, unrelated, administrative project has also been on my roster, again concerning digital matters. I have, I think, successfully navigated and completed that one, it took two whole days to accomplish.
I am aiming for total completion of these projects by the end of January, fingers crossed!
We had a blizzard on Friday, which left us with a lot of snow. Now the temperature is rising sharply, and rain is expected soon. It is supposed to turn into freezing rain by this evening.
In keeping with the weather report, we are preparing for the possible loss of power. We heat with electricity, so the heating system will cease to function during a power outage. Thank goodness we had the wood stove installed at the same time we had the electric heating system put in. We should be good for heat if the power fails.
We have lanterns for light. A full day’s worth of meals are planned and stored in a cooler. Drinking water has been set aside in containers. We are as prepared as we can be. We feel it is better to be safe than sorry.
I have one more medical test to undertake during 2025, December has been quite a month for appointments. I hope 2026 will be relatively quiet on that front. I estimate that the medical referrals in the works for me right now will not yield appointments until next fall, the wait times for things like cataract surgery are disappointingly long! Still, with one of of my referrals I was looking at a two step, four year wait time, so under a year wait time is amazingly fast for Ontario health care.
2025 is swiftly drawing to a close, in a matter of days it will be 2026!

Quote
“Art suffers the moment other people start paying for it. The more you need the money, the more people will tell you what to do. The less control you will have. The more bullshit you will have to swallow. The less joy it will bring. Know this and plan accordingly.”

If you’re setting up the water stores, that suggests to me that you don’t have municipal water/sewer services. Don’t forget to fill the bathtub for flushing purposes. (I suspect that’s already on your list but wanted to mention it just in case.)
Here’s hoping the power stays and you don’t need any of these side preparations.
Wendy, that is very good advice, thank you!
We do have municipal water, but the systems are old here, we have had two cold weather breaks in the water main on this short little street, so we keep drinking water on hand.
The composting toilet is what we would use in emergency situations, it uses no water. It consists of a five gallon bucket, and a big bag of peat moss. Two inches of peat moss on the bottom, business done, add another two inches, no smell. It can be safely composted in a dedicated composter. We use this at the Camp, it works really well. And… it is portable, so you can carry these items in your vehicle for emergency situations too.
We hope we won’t need any of these preparations, but is a good feeling to know we will be fine if the power goes out.
Interesting quote. I just make art I like, for me. I think my life is happier, not being dependent on people buying it. Stay safe, warm and dry! And happy New Year!
Happy New Year Joan!
I found the quote very apt. Creating for the love of it can have amazing results, when money is not a factor.
It just started raining here, later tonight it will turn into freezing rain, probably after we are asleep, I wonder what we will wake up to! Whatever it is we will cope with it, lol.
