The heat wave has withdrawn, at least for the moment. Such a relief, the oppressive heat and humidity were difficult to adjust to, and made venturing out of doors impossible for me. Attila continued to brave the heat of the day to work in the garden, but that took its toll, he was exhausted at the end of the day.
Our walk this morning was very enjoyable, the breeze was warm (not hot) and refreshing, the humidity was comfortable. Even walking in the full sun was pleasant.
I continue with my cardiac rehab program, which will be completed in August. Although my lifestyle and diet have been what they need to be all along, I am learning a few things that are very helpful, and can be incorporated into my daily life.
One of the tips I received was that the vascular system needs a “workout” to remain healthy. To manage my arthritis I must choose low impact activities, but managing vascular health what I need to watch out for is taking on intense physical activity without a “warm up”.
Useful tips and information have also been provided by the dietitian. I’ve added a lot of complete protein elements to my daily diet at their suggestion.
To boost protein on those days where I don’t consume quite enough, I mix one tablespoon of peanut butter, with one tablespoon of whey powder, and one half teaspoon of cocoa powder. This tastes like candy to me, as I rarely eat sweet things these days, and my palate has adjusted.
I have found the cardiac rehab program very open to my questions, and very interactive and positive.
Back to the domestic life now.
Attila harvested the first crop of carrots grown in our new raised beds. We will eat all of them fresh, they will not be preserved. We grate them and add them to stir fries, soups, casseroles, and to our daily green salad. The greens will be dehydrated, ground to a powder, to be added to soups and casseroles over the course of the winter.
Our rutabagas, also grown in the raised beds, are delicious. What we do not eat fresh, we will blanch and freeze for the winter months.
As I write Attila is cleaning a harvest of basil leaves. Soon I will join him in the kitchen to make pesto, our favourite “junk” food. It makes for a quick and easy meal when combined with tortellini, for those days when we are both very busy.

Ginger: “What have these crazy humans brought in now?”
He’s such a handsome kitty.
LOL Wendy, we are entertaining. Ginger thanks you for recognizing his good looks!
Thank goodness the cool down has cleared out all the smoke. We’ve had Excellent air quality ratings for 2 days in a row. But it did get cold last night. We got down to 8C! But today was a beautiful day. Blue skies, a light breeze, and our high was a comfy 22.
That’s quite the harvest for so early in the season. Yum!
Teri, the cooler weather certainly is welcome, it could stay this way until October as far as I am concerned.
We tried going carrots here in the ground over the years, but our land is heavy clay, they did alright, but not great. The carrots pictured were grown in one of the raised beds, which is a mix of compost, soil from the land, peat moss, and a topping of the soil we purchased. It is a much better soil for root vegetables. Our rutabagas are in the same raised bed and are doing really well.
