Last Morning Fire in the Masonry Heater

This morning we burned the last fire in the masonry heater, for this season. If we need heat in the next few weeks, we will build a fire in the little cast iron stove in the basement. Hopefully we will not need to do that, but you never know.

The last two nights I’ve slept with the window open. What joy, to hear the night sounds in the quiet of the night.

On my walk this morning I noted that the flood waters are down, ever so slightly. We are well above the flood plain, thank goodness. Not only is the house dry, but the septic system is above the flood waters and so functions as it should. The septic systems are a big part of the problem with flooding.

Here it is, the last day of April. For the first time since we moved here, we have needed to keep the masonry heater fired, until the very end of April. That is a long heating season, October to April, inclusive.

I am drying laundry on a rack on the deck; the first outdoor drying of the season. I enjoy it. Today is cloudy, but it is unlikely that it will rain. I may have to finish drying in the electric dryer tonight, as without the sun clothes drying takes a lot longer.

The “job” I have is now officially ridiculous. When a three hour shift is available, the people who fill in are now offered ONE HOUR of work. Doesn’t cover the cost of transportation; and it takes longer to travel to the job and back than it does to complete the shift. This “employer” calls itself one of the “best employers in Canada”. I beg to differ.

Today I am still making multiple calls to that government agency, and I am still being told that due to call volume, I will not be connected. I won’t give up; mostly because I can’t.

Last night I woke myself up from a recurring nightmare by singing to a demon. I am not a melodious singer, but really!

I do hope that your warming weather holds. I know that if there’s a final cold snap, Mist will be quite displeased without her masonry heater.

Sarah

Singing to a demon! I like it; very creative of you.

Winter is over and gone; the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.
Don’t know about turtles, but we have doves cooing in the eaves, making their nests and populating them for the next generation.

I can’t imagine being offered only one hour of work. Did you ever get through to that government agency?

Maggie

I did finally get through to the government agency, after 17 attempts!

I know Joan, the one hour shift seems like a very bad joke. Another heartless joke on the little people from a large Canadian corporation.
