A Man of His Word
He stands by what he says,
his words pile up beside him like empty beer cans.
She watches.
Soon he will stop talking,
that is the dangerous point in the evening.
She waits.
Tonight he loses interest,
the cathode ray tube flickers redemption.
She breathes.
This wasn't the life that I wanted,
she thinks as she gathers the dishes.
He knows.
