Busy! Being busy is not a bad thing, but it is a big change from the relentless isolation of winter. Our life has been filled with human contact since last Wednesday.

Terra called to say hello Wednesday afternoon. She wanted to let us know that she will be spending Mother's Day recuperating from dental surgery. She is having her molars removed just before the weekend. She and Lares will be visiting later in June, which is just as well because the intensity of the fly season may be dminishing by then.

Luna and Janus, Imp and Elf, Benny and Bim and Soot arrived after 10:00 PM on Thursday night after driving the whole day through. They had all their belongings packed into a small trailer towed behind the vehicle. I've never seen them more exhausted. After a short chat they turned in for the night. However, Imp wasn't feeling well and Elf was put off by the long car ride, so none of them slept soundly. We visited together on Friday morning, but Imp was feeling worse. She developed a fever and a distinct and disturbing wheeze that worsened as the day passed. After lunch they all strapped themselves into the vehicle for the last leg of their journey, another five hours. They are on the move again, returning to their house before making their next move. I now call them “The Group of Seven”!

I called Janus this morning to find out how Imp was feeling. Luna took her into emergency at the hospital when they arrived at their house, where Imp was given a cortisone shot to relieve her breathing. Apparently she is feeling much better now.

Saturday was shopping and banking day, and we thought we would just drop off a book borrowed from Em and Henry. A cup of tea was offered and the conversation took on a life of its own. We stayed much longer than we intended, but did manage to catch the grocery store open, just.

Sunday we drove out to an old friends newly purchased cottage. It was a cold day, the wind was brisk off the water, but it was warm as toast indoors and the company was most enjoyable.

Today, Monday, we are attempting to get back into our routines.

I made Chili for dinner, served with thick slices of freshly baked whole wheat bread. At the moment I am waiting for the pressure cooker to cool so that I can refrigerate the pinto beans just cooked. Attila likes corn tortillas topped with refried beans, salsa and sour cream; now he will be all set.

Attila is outside doing some gardening. Our gardens are neglected, and each year we hope to have time for them, but don't.

But the big news is, black fly season started today!

Attila is wearing his net, they swarm him as he works the garden transplanting lilies. It is too soon, I feel, for black fly season. They do not have my permission to exist. They've taken over the outdoors uninvited and unwelcome! Goodness, next thing you know the mosquitoes will insist on hatching and populating the landscape! From now till the end of June we will be wearing nets if we venture out of doors.

Photography: "a term which comes from the Greek words photos (light) and graphos (drawing). A photograph is made with a camera by exposing film to light in order to create a negative. The negative is then used in the darkroom to print a photograph (positive) onto light-sensitive paper.

Poetry: "a form of speech or writing that harmonizes the music of its language with its subject. To read a great poem is to bring out the perfect marriage of its sound and thought in a silent or voiced performance. At least from the time of Aristotle's Poetics, drama was conceived of as a species of poetry."

Journal: " "Though a journal may be many things - a treasury, a storehouse, a jewelry box, a laboratory, a drafting board, a collector's cabinet, a snapshot album, a history, a travelogue..., a letter to oneself - it has some definable characteristics. It is a record, an entry-book, kept regularly, though not necessarily daily.... Some (entries) will be nearly illegible, written in the dark in the middle of the night.... Not only is it a record for oneself, but of oneself. Every memorable journal, any successful journal, is honest. Nothing sham, phony, false...." (Dorothy Lambert from Ken Macrorie's book, Writing to be Read )
A journal is a way to keep track of your thoughts about what you read... as well as what you did on any given day."
